Seasons of Us: When to Book Your Couples Photoshoot

Seasons of Us: When to Book Your Couples Photoshoot

There’s a reason we chase golden hour.

Not because the light is perfect, well–of course, that’s part of it. But because it feels like something out of a dream—warm, honest, soft at the edges.

Each season brings its own kind of magic to couples photography. Knowing when to book can help us tell your love story exactly the way it deserves to be told. Locations tend to shift and change along with the seasons, so knowing ahead of time what you’re going for will set you up for the most success.

A poetic guide to each season ✧

Spring

Soft blooms, gentle pastels, and the feeling of fresh beginnings. Perfect for couples who love that dewy, hopeful energy. March here in Houston is typically when our color starts to come back to us–the greens are fresh, vibrant, and calling to be photographed. This is a good season for those who may want to wear something with more pastel tones, or airy pieces like a sundress or flowy skirt.

Summer

Golden fields, lake dips, creeks, and barefoot adventures. Ideal for outdoorsy couples or sessions with pets who love to play. (Especially in the water!) Think sun-drenched, joy-filled, movement-heavy frames. Even in the evenings, the temperatures can be brutal. Opt for a location with water to cool down, or ensure you have plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray, and anything else like sunglasses, a hat, or shoes that are easy to slip on and off.

𓋼 Autumn

Cozy textures and a little bit of magic in the air. Beautiful for deeper tones and nostalgic vibes—especially if you want your dog in a chunky sweater. This is a great time to delve into those earthy-toned pieces and experiment with layering. We may not get to experience a true fall here in Texas as other states do, but there is still plenty of magic to be captured if you know where to look.

Winter

Quiet, stark, and soul-stirring. Overcast, fog, or just the bare trees—winter tells a story of stillness, of holding each other close. Perfect for in-home sessions or brave hearts chasing moody romance. I don’t know what it is, but winter light has got to be some of my favorite to shoot in. Most of our nature can be fairly lifeless, but don’t let that deter you. This is a great option for those who don’t want to worry about heat and are looking for something cozy!

✧ What to consider when planning your session ✧

Time of day – If you and your partner are morning people, a sunrise shoot could be a beautiful option. The world feels quiet, the light is soft and warm, and you can use it as an excuse to go out to breakfast after. Sunset sessions are the other option for those who aren’t about the crack of dawn life. With rich gold contrasts, evening sessions are their own kind of magic.

If you’re thinking of doing something indoors, late morning to mid-afternoon typically works best for indoor sessions. Whether that be in your home or in a studio!

Comfort for you, your partner, and your dog – Think about what you may need for a successful session. High-value treats for the pup? Comfortable shoes for you? Some water for everyone? Pack a bag to bring along with any necessities.

There can be things we need that aren’t physical items as well. I find quality time with my partner before a session together does wonders. More me, it helps keeps any stress at bay, and ensuring we have no other plans and can focus on one another makes connecting and having fun that much easier come session time.

Your wardrobe (colors + layering depending on the season) – each season has its color palette that tends to work really well with the environment at that particular time. I work with my clients to help coordinate colors and patterns and have everyone looking their best. Things looking good together is only the start!

Your comfort plays a huge part too. If the outfit for your session is restrictive, doesn’t fit you right, or if you don’t feel like yourself in it–it will show in your photos. I always recommend above all else to wear something you feel good in. Whether you want to work with what you have in your closet or purchase new pieces is entirely up to you, but ensuring both you and your partner are wearing something you feel comfortable and confident in is crucial. You’ll want to remember the infectious laughter while making memories, not having to readjust your top or have limited movement from jeans that are too tight.

Mood – are you going for something playful and carefree? Or maybe something more soft and quiet? Maybe a blend of the two is more your style! Knowing what mood you’re going for can be incredibly helpful for your photographer to help document the real you and capture exactly what you’re envisioning.

There’s no wrong choice—only what feels most you.

No matter the season, the heart of your story stays the same. Whether we’re chasing light through golden fields or wrapped in blankets under bare trees, what matters most is you—your connection, your laughter, your way of loving each other. The seasons may shift, but your story is always worth telling, exactly as it is.
